Got Groceries?

Who doesn't right?

The other day I made this quirky sign for over my pantry.  Bad blogger that I am, there are no step by step pictures to share.  However, it was a pretty straightforward project.

I purchased a picture frame in the size I wanted for $19.99 at Garden Ridge, then discarded the mat and cardboard.
I also purchased paper letter stencils, glass paint, and a foam brush.  I taped the letters to the glass and painted my "groceries" word.

I didn't worry too much about the paint bleeding because I was able to wipe the excess off and in addition, I wanted the sign to have a whimsical, imperfect feel.  Good thing, too!!  Because...if you are paying close attention...you will notice that the "S" is upside down.  Oopsie!

Saturday

This past Saturday was the first time since March that we were able to just hang out at our own home with nothing major to accomplish.  It was heaven!  It also definitely made me stop and remember to appreciate that "our lives are made in these small hours"

There was a lot of making messes in the kitchen:
 Playing in pajamas:

Dinner in the dining room, this was the best picture he would give me:

Plus, several new Pinterest recipes:

On Sunday, I found this buffet for $25 on Craigslist.  The lady lived on my side of town and I called her almost right after she listed it.  Todd and I joked that she was either saying to herself  "I can't believe someone gave me $25 for this piece of junk or it sold so fast I should have charged more!"

It's a little gnarly in a few spots, but overall it is in pretty good shape...and hello...$25!!  I am trying to decide if I should keep it as is and try to restore the wood or paint it in some fashion. There are a few spots where someone sanded off the inlay.  Right now it's going to hang out in the garage while I think it over.

I hope your weekend was as lovely as mine!

Friday Fun

This week Evie has been doing a little music program everyday at church so McKinley and I have been hanging out.  Today we ventured to the neatest antique mall in town.  It's in a huge old warehouse which they pretty much left untouched before they opened the antique mall.

Thanks to American Pickers and Barry from Storage Wars...my kids think antiques are cool!  McKinley and I scoured all the items, looking them over and talking about them.  I only ended up getting a $10 screen that I am hoping to put in my workroom.  I can clip pictures on it and it's also magnetic.  I had envisioned a crib spring mattress or something more "wiry" like that, but wanted something smaller.

We also hit Edwards drive-in restaurant.  It's been featured on Man Vs. Food and they have huge tenderloin sandwiches, root beer floats, and fried mushrooms...YUM!

Buntings

I am thrilled to have a front porch where I could hang our July 4th buntings!

The heat the last week has been unbearable and all our new bushes are struggling to make it, I hope we can save them.  Crossing all my fingers and toes that the rain in the forecast actually appears.

(More) Map Wall Art

I loved the framed maps I had hanging at our old house.

If I hadn't spotted this amazing atlas book at Goodwill for $2.49, I probably would have gone ahead and hung the same framed maps in the new house.

The atlas is over 50 years old and full of vibrant color pictures.  I just had to use them in some way at our new house!  I admit, I felt a teensy bit guilty cutting pages out of the book.  I was very careful though and the book can still be enjoyed on our coffee table.

I found 3 clearance 16x20 frames from Hobby Lobby for $10 each and spray painted them white.  They were probably on clearance because the glass broke in every single frame while I was taking them apart!  Oh well, good thing I hadn't planned on using the glass anyway.

I picked 3 of my favorite maps from the book.  Then I purchased a charcoal gray mat board for $7.99 (also from Hobby Lobby) that I was able to cut down to the correct sizes.  I used some Mod Podge and coated each mat and the back of each map, before the glue had totally dried I placed the pictures on the mat and gave it another good coat of the Mod Podge.

I'll admit, at first I thought the project was going to be a complete disaster!  The maps looked like they were puckering and would not stick at all.  After they dried though, the puckers flattened out and because of the Mod Podge coat on the entire picture, they look like I bought them that way!  At least I think they do.  :)

It's very important to put a coat of Mod Podge on the mat and the back of the picture first...trust me, I learned the hard way! (see those few little puckers at the bottom?)  lol  Thank goodness for Pinterest, I was able to stop and get some tips so I didn't mess things up too much.  The puckers give it character.

The wall behind our couch is large and was very empty!  The 3 pictures filled it nicely and came it a total of $50, including atlas, mats, frames, spray paint and Mod Podge.  Tomorrow I will show what I did using the index pages of the atlas.  ;)

White Ceramic Owl

I went shopping with my sister last night and I spotted this cute guy (or girl, I guess) at TJ Maxx.  Do you ever spot something that you know you just have to have...you try to talk yourself out of it...but you keep circling back to it in the store?   That was me!

Actually, I couldn't think of a reason to buy it, until it dawned on me!  Cooking utensils!  That was all I needed, I grabbed him and brought him home.
